There are so many dads in my life. My grandpa, who I refer to as Papa, is the one I see most. He lives right down the street, and likes to pop in on a daily basis to just see how I’m doing. He’s the strongest man I know, and pretty darn amazing. He’s also mighty proud at the fact that I’m named after him… just ask him about it sometime. Mr. Malcolm, who is another grandpa to me, has blessed my life abundantly as well with his love and fun. Another dad I have the pleasure of knowing goes by the name of Bob. I know him though as Mr. Hesselgesser, he’s the father of my boyfriend. He has some of the best dad jokes you’d ever ask for. He’s hardworking, caring, and loves his family in every way. I love having him in my life. Special shout-out to Mr. McWhinnie, the dad of my best friend, for never failing to cheer me up: whether that was through a cheesy dad joke or coming up with a good ‘rapper name’ for me. He loves so well. And then there’s Mr. Doug. He leads the house church my mum and I attend, and he is a crazy man. He talks about God as if they were best friends, which I don’t doubt for a second that this is true. He loves me so much like a father would love a daughter; I am so beyond thankful for him. The last dad I’d like to mention is a man I like to call Mr. Jim. He is a close family friend of ours who has known me since I was a wee one, running around my mum’s office with reckless abandon. Him and his wife used to work with my mum, and they have both been a wonderful blessing. Mr. Jim is an amazing father in more ways than one; this would be true no matter who you asked.

I thought about all of these dads and more on Father’s day, and I thought about my own earthly father. As most of you know, my parents are divorced and I live with my rockin mum. My dad is creative out the wazoo. He showed me when I was little that no creation was impossible to make. His drive in the creative and social realm amazes me. My dad really is a cool guy; he’s just still learning how to be a dad. And honestly, that’s okay. God has redeemed dad and I’s relationship immensely, and I am so beyond thankful! I know God has big plans for each of us.

Which brings me to my next point. The Dad that has been here the whole time, who has guided my steps through everything, the best Father any child could ever ask for.

I didn’t think of Him once today.

Perhaps in passing, or in a moment here or there. But I never sat down and had a conversation with my one true Father. Today is the one day of the year dedicated to father’s; and I never once talked to THE Father.

This makes me so sad! As I sit here now, I’m overcome with emotion. I know God is surrounding me with His Fatherly love right now, filling my heart so full of His joy and peace. I am so thankful for this for many reasons: I haven’t felt this in so long, it is so calming, and the fact that He would gift this to ME on a day meant to be about Him.

Which then brings me to yet ANOTHER point: why do we only give our fathers overwhelming love on Father’s Day and not everyday? And our mothers too? I’m not saying we need to give them a card and gift every single day (though, what a blessing this would be), but showing them our gratefulness and overwhelming love through our actions on a daily basis is not difficult. This should be the same with God. Making it a point to have conversations with Him to grow our relationship is so beautiful.

I pray now over each of you reading this that you feel the warm embrace of your heart and soul by THE best Father anyone could ask for. He’s there, craving to hear those thoughts of yours. He’s blessed us with the ability to speak to Him at any given moment… why waste this?

Thank you for being willing to keep up with me on this process of unfolding my life. I am so excited about the journey my heavenly Dad is taking me on and can’t wait to see how each of you play apart!

Dad: “hey hungry, I’m Dad!”

“I had a dream last night that I was a muffler. I woke up EXHASUTed!”

  5. Bernadette,
I’m honored to be included in this illustrious and motley group of earthly fathers in your life – especially Mr. Jones as he may be the most experienced of this crew. You rightly end your reflection on Our Father. He is the only one in this list that is flawless and on whom we all rely. He has always been and will always be for comfort, foregiveness and guidance.
    Now, I’m hungry
